X Games Austin dates change

The debut of X Games Austin next year will move from mid-May to June 5-8.

Fans anticipating the first X Games in Austin will have to wait a few more weeks than previously announced.

X Games announced Thursday they will move next year's X Games Austin from the original dates of May 15-18 to June 5-8.

The change will allow for a more favorable broadcast window on ESPN, according to an ESPN spokesperson. In May, X Games would have had difficulty getting premium broadcast times on ESPN because ESPN broadcasts some of the early rounds of the NBA playoffs.

The three-week change may mean a difference in temperature in Austin. According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures in Austin in May are generally in the mid-80s, while average temperatures push 90 in June. In addition, June is the rainiest month of the year on average in that part of Texas.

"The safety of athletes and spectators is always our top priority, and we believe a slight weather difference won't be a factor," said the ESPN spokesperson.

X Games had previously announced it will remove all international events from its 2014 schedule, eliminating X Games in Tignes, France, Foz Do Iguaçu, Brazil, Barcelona, Spain and Munich, Germany.

The remaining X Games next year will include the long-running winter event in Aspen on Jan. 23-26 and the debut of X Games Austin.
