Real Snow Backcountry spotlight: Mikey Rencz

The difference between watching a snowboard video by yourself and watching it in the company of another *really good* snowboarder can be incredible. Often times there are so many nuances that we miss, but they see, for the simple reason that they know what it takes to pull a video part off. So we figured for this contest we'd ask everyone in it what they saw and liked most about their fellow RSBC contenders' parts. Because this is snowboarding, after all. There are no real competitors here -- only friends. Enjoy.

  • John Jackson: That first shot of Mikey's is a nail biter -- huge front 3 and he finds a perfect little transition, but it's right next to those rocks. Risky business. The back 5 he does off the sort-of hip style jump that's barely in the sun might be my favorite shot of this whole thing. That's such an insane feature. Plus, you can tell that it's crunch time because the sun's going down and it looks like only one other person hit it. That's probably his first try, so to do a back 5 and land it perfect is badass. The last Cab double cork he does is really sick too -- way different rotation than most.Β

  • Bode Merrill: Mikey is so good at at Cab 7s, which is a really hard trick for me so I always get excited watching them. His was so good! Also, he doesn't seem like a backflip guy, from watching all his parts over the years, so seeing him do a straight-up backie was a treat!

  • Eric Jackson: That Cab 9 was so insane. This part got me super hyped to catch some airtime. And how about that ender? It reminded me of the one JP Walker did that was supposedly the first one ever...

  • Bryan Iguchi: Creative dissection of the terrain riding transitions, hips, re-entries... He has a unique view and approach that I really appreciate.

  • Scotty Lago: He's got such good style, mixed with big booters!
