Watch 'Freesurfer, Part 1' on ABC's "World of X Games"
Welcome to Freesurfer, Part 1
'Freesurfer, Part 1' focuses on the soul of surfing, featuring the best freesurf sessions with top pro surfers from around the world. Instead of focusing on contests, scores and judges, 'Freesurfer, Part 1' gives an inside look at pure surfing. The "World of X Games" episode provides a unique look into surf trips around the globe only the top surfers in the world have experienced.
Remote surf destinations
Here, Dillon Perillo takes advantage of remote surf in the Mentawai Islands on a Rip Curl surf trip in 2015.
Away from the tour
Gabriel Medina may be top contender on the World Surf League Championship Tour, but he also makes time to search for waves outside of the competition spotlight. Here, he samples waves in Bali.
Freedom of the ride
A freesurfer's journey begins with the ocean, the waves and the energy. It's an addiction to the freedom of the ride.
Essence of creation
The ocean is life. It's the true essence of creation, for all life comes from the ocean. The freesurfer forms a relationship with the ocean and always returns to the ocean seeking that connection.
Runs in the family
Freesurfing runs in the family for Mason Ho. His father pushed him in on his first wave as a child while his uncle watched. Since then, Ho has gained years of experience in the water, and has come to be dubbed "the world's most entertaining surfer."
The need for freesurfing
Australian surfer Matt Wilkinson is currently a world title contender on the World Surf League's Championship Tour. That doesn't stop his need for freesurfing away from the competitions, judges and jerseys.
Beauty of the ride
Mick Fanning rose to international stardom following a chance encounter with a shark in the water during his heat at the J-Bay Open in 2015. Since that time, Fanning has backed away from a heavy competition schedule to focus on the beauty of the ride.
"The water is really mesmerizing," says Nikki Van Dijk, a seasoned freesurfer.
Owen Wright suffered a potentially career-ending brain injury in late 2015, but ultimately returned both the water and top form in competition. He still enjoys his time away from the competition circuit though.
Tim Bisso takes it to the next level in Sumatra.
