Inside the Alta Redshift MX Electric Dirt Bike
Gear: The Alta Redshift MX
Alta Motors' Redshift MX is a silent assassin responsible for shaking up the motocross world. This all-electric machine will leave you questioning your relationship with petrol fuels and combustion engines once you experience its power and see the doors it can open for new riding locations. Here, XGames.com takes a look inside the new bike.
Inside the engine
A 14,000rpm PMAC motor generates instantaneous power by means of a 350v waterproof Lithium-Ion battery with a lifecycle of 1000 hours. As Josh Hill proved at Red Bull Straight Rhythm, keeping up with modern four-stroke 250F dirt bikes isn't a problem despite the bike weighing in at 267 pounds. Since there isn't a piston or crank to create rotational engine mass, the Redshift feels much lighter than it actually is. Regular oil changes are also a thing of the past.
No more stalling
You'll never have to worry about stalling your bike again with Alta's single speed, clutch-less transmission. 100% power on demand makes the days of slipping the clutch to build engine revs a memory.
Color options available
Aggressive body styling covers a forged and welded aluminum frame. There is also a yellow color option.
Sleek and stylish
No need for air induction via an airbox leaves empty space in the rear, and since there isn't an exhaust system to generate heat, lighter than aluminum plastic-composite material is utilized to form the sub-frame. Did we mention that you'll never have to clean an air filter again?
Narrow, nimble ride
Thanks to internal water cooling, the Redshift MX requires no radiators, making for a narrow, nimble ride. Moving up, the left side of the handle bar features buttons to select four power maps on the fly -- Trail, MX Race, Performance, and Overclocked. On the right is the motor start and kill switch.
Ready to ride
The cross barpad is where you'll find all the important bike info: Battery life, speed, selected map, and miles or hours ridden. The pad blinks green to let you know the motor is activated and ready to ride because the bike is silent at idle.
WP 4CS Forks dampen the ride up front while being held in place by black triple clamps. There is also a WP shock in the rear. The suspension offers plenty of adjustments for fine tuning.
Charged in four hours
Swap out the gas can for a power cord. The Redshift MX can be charged through a household 110 volt outlet in four hours, but to achieve a 2.5 hour recharge time, you will need 240 volts.
Stopping power is provided by top quality Brembo components. The front 260mm rotor is clamped by a two-piston brake caliper, with a 240mm rotor, single-piston brake caliper in the rear.
No gears to shift
Not having to shift gears requires some getting used to because all 40hp and 120ft-lbs tq. is available at all times with the flick of a wrist. It goes from 0 to 100 real quick!
Bike of the future
Alta Motors is the first manufacturer to bring a competitive electric bike to the market. Others have tried before with less than lack luster results. Depending on how you ride, you can get upwards of four hours riding time in the trails, or as little as 20 minutes in high energy consumption riding situations such as expert motocross.
In a flash
You will have no problem exploding berms and propelling yourself out of corners in a flash on the Redshift MX as Frank Lettieri demonstrates.
No engine noise
With no engine noise for complaints and a green outlook on riding, the possibilities that Alta Motors brings to the table with their complete Redshift lineup is exciting and enticing.
