Torstein Horgmo wins BEO Slope

In Laax, Switzerland, 300 of the world's best snowboarders ditched the park to discover powder stashes in the trees at the Burton European Open, where event organizers cancelled Thursday's Slopestyle events due to high winds, low visibility and recent snowfall. Based on yesterday's semifinal results, X Games 2013 Big Air gold medalist Torstein Horgmo was crowned the 2013 BEO Slopestyle champion.

"Six years ago I broke my back here in Laax at the BEO, " said Horgmo after the news that his first-place finish in semis would stand for the contest win. "Now I'm back for the first time and I won. It can't be better! It has been an amazing week. Too bad the weather didn't allow to ride the finals today, but we all gave our best yesterday."

Mark McMorris joined Torstein on the podium with a second-place finish -- which moves him into the top spot of the World Snowboard Tour Slopestyle ranking with 801.62 points. Sebastien Toutant rounded out the podium in third place and climbed to eighth place in Slopestyle for the Tour.

Torstein's winning run started out with a boardslide 180 out on the first rail straight into a backside 180 on, switch 50-50 Cab 360 off on the down rail. This set him up for a switch backside 900 on the first jump, into back-to-back double cork 1080s, and finished out the lower section with a frontside 270 to switch front board to regular on the down rail, a styled out method over the hip, and alley oop at the bottom.

For the ladies, both semifinals and finals were cancelled. The 39 riders in the competition split the prize money evenly and spent the day riding through knee deep powder in the trees with $790 in their pockets.

Friday's halfpipe finals are expected to run according to schedule. Arthur Longo of France qualified in first followed by Luke Mitrani and Swiss rider Iouri Podladtchikov.
