Ayumu took X Games Oslo 2016 SuperPipe gold, becoming the first Japanese athlete ever to win an X Games winter event (Yuki Kadono went on to win Big Air at the same event). The young phenom stormed onto the competitive halfpipe scene as a 14-year-old and earned silver at XG Aspen 2013, becoming the youngest athlete (at the time) to earn an XG medal at a winter event. He went on to earn Olympic silver at Sochi in 2014, turning him into a national icon in Japan. Coming back from a scary injury at the 2017 Burton U.S. Open that left him with a split liver, Ayumu won the Copper Grand Prix/World Cup halfpipe contest in Dec. 2017.
