X Games League FAQs

A: Put simply, two X Games events a year isn't enough. The people want more. So, X Games is building two leagues - one winter and one summer - with cross-discipline teams.

A: Imagine a winter team with snowboarders and skiers, men and women. Imagine a summer team with men and women, in bmx and skateboarding. Imagine a team with Eileen Gu and Markus Kleveland as part of it!? Or a team with R Willy and Arisa Trew on it.

Action sports deserves to be on a pedestal year round and not just a few times a year. Athletes deserve a secure and sustainable living. That means more contests, more often, and more ways to earn.

A: Four global winter events, and four global summer to start. Both include the US. Each league will have its own points structure, and athletes within the teams will contribute points towards a teams and individual championships.

A: Teams will provide athletes with a new level of stability — including annual base compensation, and additional commercial opportunities. This will also give audiences more opportunities to watch and support their favorite athletes, and find new ones.

A: Yes! Medals and prize purses will continue to be included in all X Games contests. Last year X Games paid out $2.43 million to athletes. XGL aims to make that much more.

A: The X Games League will launch in 2026. And work is already well underway. Beyond industry consultants, Advising X Games in the league formation are leading international law firm Proskauer Rose LLP – the leader in representing both well-established and emerging sports leagues, teams and investors worldwide – as well as Inner Circle Sports LLC, a boutique investment bank focused on the global sports, media and entertainment industries. MSP Sports Capital assumed ownership of X Games in October 2022, with ESPN retaining a minority share.

A: Yes. We’re working out what that looks like and will share more details at a later date. We envision XGL to become a year-round platform for the athletes which coupled with the incentive structure will require significant commitment. That being said, we do envision scheduling around existing competitions, such as the Olympics Games, to enable XGL athletes to compete.

A: With an annual industry-wide draft. If an athlete nominates for the draft but is not selected by a team, they will remain eligible as alternates.

A: Not enough people are putting money into our industry. We’re putting the top athletes into a contest structure that is known and easily digested by the masses, creating more opportunity for your favorite athletes. And more people watching more often means more opportunity for the industry as a whole. Wouldn’t it be rad if everyone cared about this thing that we love — and knew what a tre flip was.
